or is it total weight of the car i should consider. I know the sentence is a bit confusing but I'm a bit confused in how to even aske the question. Let's try this -- if I put my car which weight 3800 lbs on 4 jack stands that are rated at two each is each stand at capacity or hold about a quarter of its rated capacity?

Default you should be fine with a 2-ton jackstand

the rating should be for the amount of weight that the stand itself can hold, not the total weight of the car

Default

3800 lbs = 1.72 tons *anyway*, so even if each of them had to support whole car you would be OK
