Where does this damn hose go? (Already asked on A4 forum)
<img src="http://home.earthlink.net/~triphibious2/vac_to_plenum.gif">
I'm talking about the vac hose which I marked red in the diagram.
My '96 2.8 12v got a brittle vacuum hose that needs to be replaced. It's a 3mm (interior diameter) hose that goes from one of the gizmos on the plenum to the firewall. The hose disappears in a rubber boot between the two hoses that go to/come from the heater core. Where does it go?
I pulled the rubber boot out as far as I could, and I could actually see into the area underneath the dash (I saw the throttle cable and the clutch pedal area). I ripped out the under-dash cover, hoping I'd be able to see where that vacuum hose goes. No luck, I can't tell if the hose goes deep into the dash, or if it is connected to a spot right under the before-mentioned rubber boot.

Mine goes off to the left side under the left heater core hose and disappears
deep into the guts of the dashboard.
I could never find where it went in the Bentley Manual, because it is not in the vacuum system section. It's in the Heating and Airconditioning Section, Page V 87-11.
You need to go under dashboard near the passenger footwell. The vacuum hose goes to a one way valve that supplies a vacuum reservoir for the fresh/recirculating air flap. A detailed layout of this system is on page V 87-26. This page contains the bad news: "Must remove heater/AC assembly and complete instrument panel to remove [this system]." If you are lucky, you can get to the vacuum hose connection without removing the entire dashboard, but remember that you have to somehow route a new vacuum hose to this location.
Anyway, I finally figured out where that damn hose went.
Good Luck,
John

Moribundman: Read my response below, I figured out where it goes . . .
I do not have a scanner, but anyone with a working copy of the computerized Bentley Manual should have the ability to help you get an electronic copy of those two pages I cited.

Goes to a vac reservoir behind the heater/evap box...
Between the evap box & firewall, real pain to get to. There's a valve it connects to, too, that can break if you're not careful. Use a lubricant when your going back together, to make it easier to get back on...
