Don't quote me on this, but I think an ethanol mix may be mandatory in large metro areas to meet federal emissions laws... just as emissions testing is required in certain metro areas.

Shell is certainly a clear choice and they sometimes mention their formulations target the issues with DI engines.

As noted, use the correct oil (VAG 502.00) and skip the additives. You'd never need them and your Owner's Manual warns against.

http://www.toptiergas.com/ contains an explanation of what is and why use top tier gasoline. Also you can find which retailers (US/Canada) are considered top tier. As for the oil additives, just use the recommended quality oil, correct viscosity, and timely changes.

Does top tier apply for Diesel? I just got my TDI and I am still on the first free tank of gas.

I was thinking of using my local shell station as they are the closest to my house for refueling.

I have been using Shell 91 (v-power) for the past 3 months (i am located in Vancouver, BC Canada)...Shell 91 does NOT contain any ethanol....

with Shell 91 v-power it does give me better mileage, I could constantly get 30km to 40km compare to Petro Canada 91 I used before...

also, i find Shell 91 does not darken my exhaust tip since i switched...(not sure if gas matters)...

however, i do find shell 91 v-power gives a bit more "roaring" idling sound compare to petro canada 91....

oh by the way, i have a 2013 audi q5 2.0t....

It's somewhat interesting that some on here with 3.2 engines who only use Shell have had the carbon buildup issue also. Is it that Shell isn't all its cracked up to be? Or is it that gas quality really isn't the main contributing factor to the carbon buildup issue?
