Default Adblue CEL

I realize us TDI owners can get free DEF refills from the dealer but that's almost a full day's commitment and not really worth my time. They want nothing to do with us any more. My last several oil changes have been at an indy shop since my prepaid has run out. As a result, my DEF hasn't been topped off in quite a while and is now telling me I have 1000 miles to refill. Considering how little I drive, 1000 miles won't be seen until 2023...seriously. I'd like to take care of this from the comfort of my garage despite the cost. From what I've read, I see a lot of people simply buy a small OE jug and then use that jug as an adapter/funnel for a much larger jug. Is this still true today? Most of the posts were dated 3 or 4 years ago.

If my car is giving me an Adblue CEL, how much do you think I'll need to put in there? Does anyone have a part number and/or recommended place to purchase both the small and large jug of this stuff?

Thanks for the help!

I know hardcore Audi people aren't going to like this but....it is just urea. You can get a 2.5 gallon of BlueDEF just about anywhere. Grocery store, auto parts store, Walmart, etc for under $20

You can get a slightly cheaper no name brand at Autozone.

Adblue is just a brand of standard urea (otherwise known as cat ****) which is just water and urea mixed. I haven't used Adblue in a while now as I haven't been to a dealership since 2019 I think.

At no time did I state that I must use any particular brand of DEF. I'm merely asking for filling procedures since all the DIY's are several years old and have any other DEF suppliers provided an adapter that makes it easier to fill our tanks with minimal spillage?
I do plan to get and use blah blah brand DEF from my local Autozone. My question is regarding the filling of the tank with the least amount of effort and spillage. Is an adapter necessary? The OE DEF jug from Audi provides a unique adapter. Do I absolutely need that? etc.

no adapter is necessary. the hose is the same diameter as the filler opening. Wear gloves as there is always a little spillage.

When we got my wife's TDI I purchased a 4-pack of the OEM AdBlue and have been using those bottles to refill ever since. This is the OE bottle:

I
just go to Walmart for the DEF:

If you're seeing a warning it will definitely take all 2.5 gallons ... I think the system holds in excess of 6 gallons so you might want to get two of those.
