Best wheel size upgrade for me.
Do not use summer tires--allseason Conti DWS-06. Went from 18" stock wheels to 20" w/ 255/45/20 tires. Piece of cake. Bought 20" Audi takeoff wheels & tires from new 2018 Q5. Perfect fitment-no spacers & fair price. Improved handling & still a good ride.

Tires must be one of those Miller vs Budweiser arguments... everyone is very dug into their point of view. Here, OP asks about size of wheels to use with a planned summer tire purchase, and the first response he gets is “don’t use summers, use all-seasons.”
As has been stated many times before, there are excellent reasons to run season dedicated tires.
OP: in my opinion, 20 inch wheels is the ideal size to use with summers, for handling and performance. I recommend Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S.

My 20" wheels have the same circumference as 18" so no problem with the correct tire size as quoted. Have previously commented on ride etc. Yes $1500 is a good deal as long as tires are close to new & you don't have to add freight costs.

Changing wheel size
I have 2 2016 Q5 2.0. Mine has 20" & my wife's has 19". 18 or 19 is the best all around size. 18 if you want the best ride. My 20" is more sporty & still not uncomfortable. Tires also important. Both our cars have Conti DWS-06 which are a more comfortable than most other brands.

I use 17" wheels and Blizzzak snows in the winter on a 2016 Q5 3.0T. Same outer diameter, so speedometer, etc. are accurate. Summer tires are on the original 19" wheels.
I do not think 16" wheels will clear the brakes. If you go to TIRERACK you can see tires and wheels of various sizes with correct wheel offsets for your car. (No I don't work for them, but have purchased summer and winter tires from them for years. They are good.)
