We always use the solid clay bar.. not sure it's artificial or not? Having spent $50 on some 'professional' clay from some car website (sorry don't remember which one we were shopping at the time) and we have bought the McGuires on sale at AutoZone or Wal-mart at $15. We have found NO difference in either bars! Well maybe the $50 version was a slightly larger bar but the McGuires came in a kit with the wetting spray.
IMO so long as you pay attention to the clay itself to how dirty/contaminated itself gets and if it is filthy then move on to a new piece so those contaminants do not re-scratch your cars surface. That said you do not use the whole bar at one time ... take a section off to use. OHHH and it's VERY important to keep the car surface wet or slick so the clay doesn't 'dry drag' and do more harm than the contaminants already in your surface/paint.
You can as others have said use the clay on your windshield AND your rims too (I use my used pieces here).
One more thing we pre using Dawn dish soap and wash the cars completely 2x to remove any residual previous wax.

I don't agree with this at all. I've heard of many people doing the same but I've seen no proof this is beneficial and fear this actually might be doing damage.

As I said/typed WE use ... I don't mean to force others to do the same - this is our choice, as we have at home tested the Dawn removes the wax we put on our cars (Zaino).

I too always use Dawn prior to a clay bar and polish session to also assure complete removal of all prior wax.

When did I even imply that you were forcing others to do the same?
Oh that's right, I didn't. <img src=http://www.timelessgaming.com/timeless/forum/images/smilies/Kolo%20negative.gif>

Mind if I change direction a bit ??
Serenity now..... :-)

Any benefit with spending big bucks on "fancy" carnuba waxes and sealants etc, etc.. ?

Although many will justifiably herald Zaino and high content carnauba waxes, I find that less costly Meguairs NXTech 2.0 (synthetic) produces a great shine with far easier application. I do use Griot's Garage Paint Sealant periodically tho' as a base.

You can get yourself a great sealant for $15. However, the initial surface prep is key to making any of these products last.

But a wax for 50 to even a hundred bucks ?? Would I see the benefit now or years from now?

In theory the more costly the wax the better the perceived "depth of shine." But most any modern automotive store wax or synthetic will protect the finish to a very good degree, so I guess my direct answer would be neither.

A similar nod to surface preparation being the major element, much as it is when painting.

So, wash/clay/polish properly and then use a decent, but not ridiculously priced, wax and your finish will look good now and later.
