Default does the 2012 2.0T have oil consumption issue?

So I took my car for the airbag recall and couple other issues, one was the "add 1 qt of oil" that came on twice within oil change intervals. The dealer said they did the oil consumption test and to bring it back after 750-1000 miles. I gave it back to them after 900 some miles (the light did not come on in these 900 miles), they said they did some more oil consumption tests and now the pistons and rings have to be changed and it will take a week. Talk about a surprise! It is covered under CPO but I thought the oil issues were in the 3.2 engine and not an issue on the 2012 model?

any thoughts? the dealer hasnt shared much with me, they dont give many details, they said they just the run the test and do what Audi tells them to do as the next step. Car has 65k miles and all services done

Yes, there have been many reports of 2012 2.0T oil consumption. It was supposed to be fixed with MY2012, but it seems that they continued to use the same version of the engine for some time into 2012. Mine is one of them. I'm getting about 400 miles per quart, and I just crossed 80,000 miles. But in about 3 hours I won't own it any longer, so not my problem. The dealership knows about it, so it's not like I'm dumping the problem on them.

I'm in a love/hate relationship with Audi. There are certainly many things I like about the car, but there's an equal number of things that drive me (and my wife) crazy. But it was the poor service she received at the dealership recently that has sealed the case for me. I'm not moving into an equivalent car, but it's one that will satisfy me for the time being. Getting a new '18 Subaru Outback with the 6 cylinder and all the bells and whistles. Like I said, it's a step down from the Audi in some ways, but for other areas it's going to be an improvement.

To be sure buy from MY 2014. My 2009 Q5 had oil pistons, conrods, engine software, and PCV changed from parts made in 2014 (software and pcv year 2016 bcs they forgot to do stage 1) so I am keeping it. After they did stage 1 for free my mechanical problems started (audi way). Stoped servicing my audi at Cyprus dealer. (lost 1l of oil in 3 days+turbo noise after my last audi dealer visit). Fixed oil problem but not turbo boost noise. Will change crank seal to verify. Not nice to feel being taken advantage of .

should i ask the dealer to change the belt tensioner while they are in there changing the pistons? Reading online it looks like the the belt tensioner is a known issue in the 2.0T also.

any comments appreciated, thanks!

You didn't state the mileage on the car, but if you're at 70,000 miles plus, I would recommend it. You should also consider the water pump, as it is easily accessible because of the other items being removed.

Do all of this. You’ll be paying very minimal additional labor plus the cost of the parts.

Noticed you are in Auburn, WA. didnt sell it to Burien Audi in bellevue, did you? That’s where I bought mine, black on black, some paint damage on the right rear corner but not real noticeable, eating about 1 qt every 400-500 miles. right at 101,900 miles now.

Nope, bought from and traded back to Chaplin's VW/Subaru (now owned by Michael's Toyota) in Bellevue. Black on black with no damage whatsoever on it. It had 67,000 miles when I bought it last September and just over 80,000 when I returned it to them last Wed evening. Right now am completely satisfied with my new Outback 3.6R Touring. I've been dealing with this dealership for almost 20 years, and can't speak more highly about them. They knew about the oil consumption when I traded it in, but since they sold it to me they still gave me $1000 over trade in value. Good dealership.
