Thanks - I'll look into this further and let everyone know the outcome. Anything is better than $850 - 1000. I was prepared for about $200! What a shock that was...
+3. # is way too high. If you have the key still, you actually just need the remote part and you insert the physical key back into it. Those are somewhere in the $100-200 range.
You should be able to buy from the discount web dealers too. I have done that before, but apparently without a prior relationship they are reluctant now. That's more on the cut key portion though--which is done by VIN with your car registration and ID so they can be sure you are legit. The remotes are just generic Q5 though until first programmed to a car.
Programming fee in my experience is typically the same no matter the key count, so if you feel short now, lost the plastic key or what ever, it only costs incremental parts charge to do more at same time.

$153.55 from audiusaparts.com for the remote component for mine (which says Hybrid)--there are a few variants depending on exact vehicle. Again, that is remote component only, and apparently all earlier poster needs since it was water damage. Cut key portion is $65.63. Latter is what dealer probably scrutinizes more since it cut to fit car by VIN. Programming additional--one or more as mentioned before.
Also for earlier poster just in case, you don't just buy these on eBay and get them "reprogrammed" as those ads might have you think. Those are just badly overpriced paperweights. If remote was already programmed to a different vehicle, those become useless except for that specific one.
