K & N Air filter for '14 Q5 TDI
Hi- Looking for opinions on putting a K & N E-1987 air filter on my Q5 TDI, 11000 mi & I love the car. Any comments out there or should I stick to the factory paper element. Thanks- David

Dave, if you're lovin' the car, you'd never fit a "K&N".

Why switch to a K&N? Milage gain some small tenth of a percent. Sound really? All you gain will be the opportunity to be denied any powertrain warranty claim.

To each his/her own.
Have had a K&N on the Q5 for 4 years. And two years on the S5. In addition, a cold air intake K&N on my Silverado. Never an issue, clean, allow to dry and oil lightly and you're good to go.
If re-installed while wet or over oiled, it can cause MAF issues.
Advantage for me is that I clean them regularly and place the OEM in the car while it completely dries. Then oil very lightly.
Lots of folks driving around with a dirty/partially clogged paper air filter and only realize just how bad it was when it gets changed and their engine feels peppier.

"Compared to the AC, the K&N “plugged up” nearly 3 times faster, passed 18 times more dirt and captured 37% less dirt. See the data tables for a complete summary of these comparisons."

If I get less filtration, but better throttle response, I'll take the better throttle response. And let the detergent oil and oil filter pick up whatever the air filter allowed.
And yes, I've had American cars go 300K+ with many other things replaced and never an engine due to something other than a paper element filter.
The cold air intake, when installed in my Silverado improved the throttle response so dramatically, that I never went back to the confined/restrictive air box, 6+ years ago.
Some people are bitten by a K&N or similar air filter and resort back to the paper element. Others, have done hundreds of thousand miles without issues. YMMV.
