Not sure why there's three, but one is the license and one is the map. Maybe one is MMI firmware. I haven't performed an update, but I'd guess that the license has to be on a separate card to make it a one time use.

Paid ~$500 for the dealer to update the maps in our '12 just before heading south on long road trip to Phoenix. Was supposed to take an hour but ended up taking 7 and the Nav now takes up to a minute to boot up vs only a few seconds before. Also found with the update (2014) it was still missing a lot of stuff along the route and in Phoenix itself compared to google maps on the iPhone. My 2 cents. Definitely interested to hear how this new option works!

Yah I've left my 2014 alone.I'm in the Montreal area and there's been a lot of change, new roads/highways etc so I often find myself driving through a farmer's field on my GPS.It works well in the city where nothing really changes and I consider a major safety feature.Archaic, stupid expensive yes, but I'd do it all over again.By then I suspect it will all be done through my phone.
My MMI has been perfect and very satisfying so I'm certainly not letting them in there to fool around.Anyone running Win10 knows all about how "updates" improve our lives-Hah.

Update completed
I understand they can only be loaded into a single system, so can't be shared/resold.

That's correct (firmware/map/license), i had to supply my VIN for order, it's for license creation i guess.
i just performed the update tonight, went super well and very easy. First SD card is for firmware update, this took 30min. Then it was the map 2016 update and it took 2.25 hr. Lastly was the SD card for license and that took 5min. I don't see why dealers rips everyone off by charging 3hr labor for update whem i actually sat in the car perhaps 10min for swapping SD cards..... go figure. No wonder nobody wants to get updates.
Now that the update is done, missing highway and roads are all there, finish driving in the fields like before....LoL.

Appears there's been a substantial price jump - website now shows 249 GBP. 😫
