I got about 30 miles (~1 gallon) on my Q5 TDI, conservatively driving. I wouldn't go that far again.

I did about 15 miles once, that too because it was early morning and most of the gas stations were closed

But I dont think I am brave enough to try that again in this heavy car

I've done it several times and I'd wager that approximately 1 gallon is correct. I've run out once and knew it was inevitable as I was REALLY pushing it (in area where there aren't many gas stations) - ran out literally 1 mile from the gas station. (2011 Q5 3.2)

It's a 2 gallon "reserve"...once it hits 0 miles to empty. So depending on your particular driving style and mpg etc you can get roughly 40 miles, but then you are running it extremely low which is not good either.
You can see this yourself if you manage to fill-up just when it switches to 0 miles to empty you will typically get only 17-18 gallons in the 19.8 gallon capacity tank.

This seems to be standard, I have tested on both Lexus & Acura, around 2 gallon left after hitting 0.

It's not a good idea to run your tank to almost empty:

Running on empty: Low gas in the tank can be costly
