I ended up just leaving the battery connected. The fuel tank is pretty sealed up, and there didn’t seem to be much risk.

Updating this thread to say that I installed Costco’s Interstate H8 900 CCA battery in my ‘11 Q5 2.0t for $184.99 plus tax. Perfect fit and didn’t have to update my ECU.
