Default Q5 TDI - timing chain

Our Q5 has been getting looked at (for far too long, but that's another story) and the conclusion is a problem with the timing chain, and it will need replacement. Out of standard warranty but still inside time/mileage (2015, ~60k miles) for emissions warranty. From what I can tell much of the engine is covered by this extended warranty, but not clear if the timing chain is. Balance chain seems to be though.

Anyone with insights on this? Dealer is quoting about $10k for repair, which I'm sure can be done more cheaply elsewhere (and my impression is most of this is labor).

You should try to get them to cover it under the warranty. I suspect they will refuse. The text (which is linked in other threads at this forum) states engine and long block and emissions. Have you been hearing a chain rattle?

When you say it’s been getting looked at “for far too long”, how long has it been? Audi recently purchased my 2015 TDI under the emissions settlement because it had been in the shop for more than 30 days during the 18 months following the date my car received the diesel fix. When did you get the fix?

3 months in shop. But we got the fix 3 years ago or whenever it was. Was the 18 mos in the settlement somewhere? What was your issue?

we were getting check engine light intermittently for a year or so. On second or third try they narrowed to timing chain and tensioner.

The 18 months/18,000 miles was in the settlement. Mine was in the shop for a total of 35 days for various items covered under the warranty during the 18,000 miles following the fix, thereby triggering a buyback at an amount more than I had paid for the car back in 2014.
