Default Roof Rack Question

For those of you who have used your roof rack... When you install the crossbars does it mark/scratch the side rails? Do the metal crossbar feet make contact with the side rails or is there a rubber pad in between?

I've had mine on and off a few times... no problems with any scratching. There are rubber pads where the feet mount the rails.

Do you need any special tool to install.
If not installed - did they feet in the back of the Q5?
The reason I asked, we planning pick up our Q5 in Germany and there will be 4 carry on suitcases and backpacks. Just make sure all of this can feet nicely.
When new car delivered - is roof ruck in the box or installed on the roof?

The only thing needed to install the racks is the torque wrench that comes with the car. It was a good idea that Audi included this as it reduces the risk of over tightening and damaging the rails.

At each mount point, there is only one bolt to tighten so it goes on pretty quickly. It’s not a conventional screw or bolt head though so the only thing you can use is the torque wrench provided.

Btw, my racks were not pre-installed when I picked up my Q5. I recall my sales guy saying that the cars are shipped with them on but his dealership removes them for delivery. It probably varies by dealer.

When not installed, the racks easily fit in the rear cargo area.
