yes that first post is a real gold mine - still have to finish exploring! Looks like there are a number of those harnesses on eBay as well. Sadly my experience on eBay.de did not go well when I tried to buy one of the control units on offer - I was using google translate which made for slow going and the seller got suspicious and backed out on the sale. 😞

I found this claiming to be compatible with A4 A5 - Hella 5DS 010 154-011 Steuergerät Anhängerkupplung (google translate Hella 5DS 010 154-011 trailer coupling control unit) - any thoughts about whether this would be a suitable replacement for 8K0.907.383E? Came up as a match in a search for 8K0.907.383E on ebay.de.

I would not count on it. AFAIK, the part number in the first post is the only one that works.

Btw, you'll get more search results if you delete the periods in the part number. The periods just make it easier to read

thanks! I found the wiring harness and mounting bracket on the ebay.co.uk site - so nice to just get things done in the good old English! In any case I’m well into the vortex now - will be lurking on eBay til I see the control unit.

That's fine. Only thing that matters is the part number.

I ended up creating a wiring harness using the Audi module and a Hopkins 7/4 pin sockets. I ran seven wires from the socket to the controller module. When I bough the module it came with the connectors and severed wires so it was easy to crimp on the socket wires. For the brake controller (2 wires) I bought the Audi connector and pins and crimped that to work. Then again, I have more time than money so figured a day or two in the garage is better than spending $350 on a harness.

Well all 3 parts ordered - one from Latvia, one from Lithuania and the control module from Deutschland!
