Definitely no warranty issue. Most all cars recommend a grade, but can not force you to use a specific grade. I only ever really used premium on my BMW. I doubt I would use it even on that one now. It just doesn't make a huge difference.

Nobody seems to have mentioned that the Audi will compensate for your fuel octane rating automatically. Unless you change a lot you may not be aware that the timing and mixture is altered. You will not only get slightly less power with lower octane but your fuel economy will not be quite as good the net result is you wont save money buying cheaper fuel.

It may be cheaper to fill but you're not going as far each time as you are effectively driving with a smaller engine

Also, using a lower octane long term may or may not damage your engine due to all the cycles of slight knocking and engine timing retardation.

I have never understood the drive to save 10~15 cents a gallon by getting lower octane gas than what's recommended. That starbucks coffee in your cup holder cost more than what you're saving using a lower grade gas. I also love the folks who drive 5 miles out of their way to save a few cents.

when I got my Q5, I had not realized the need for premium fuel. my previous car was a real beater and I just filled it up with the cheapest gas I could find. so for a minute I was 'owwcrap' thats gonna cost me....
then I did the simple math;
12.000miles/yr on my lease, at a low 19mpg, at maybe 10cts difference for Premium over the mid-grade which I had expected to need to use. 63buck difference a year. pffft, who cares!
as said, probably spend more at Starbucks or on surfwax than that a year haha!

The Q is suppose to get better gas mileage on 91 octance as well.

NO reason to put anything but regular (87 octane) in this vehicle unless it's really heavily loaded (and hot out) or you're towing.

I have yet to see evidence to support this claim, but I would be DELIGHTED if it were true!

On my RS4, VAG-COM real-time plots (run logs) prove that the car is VERY sensitive to octane. Even with 93, the car will pull 6-10 degrees of timing advance under full load. I blend my own 95-octane fuel and that is the sweet spot for that particular Audi. I'm a chemist and own a couple of analytical labs so this is one of the bennys. I am certain that my particular Q5 does not like the last (and only) load of 87 octane. But that thought is purely subjective and remains to be proven.

Edit: BTW, I used to own a 330xi for a winter car and wish I still had it!
