Is this necessary to do? I read some mixed things about it when searching elsewhere. I believe it’s because of the signal boost. A paper was given with all pertinent registration info needed for the wireless provider.

See Audi Technical Service Bulletin 91, rev 2. "91 Audi phone box customer registration form and reporting obligation by customer to MNO." This provides additional information needed to register (at least on Verizon): model # and FCC ID#.

I never registered, I don't think you need to do this.

It's an FCC thing. By registering, you help your wireless carrier track down your device if it ever goes rogue and starts interfering with cellular networks. I guess there once was a problem with these devices, then the devices got better but the FCC requirement remains.

I bet hardly anyone bothers with registration and I wonder how many of those who do end up reaching an agent who knows anything about this.
