hey all,
when you guys guys shut off the car and stay in you car, anyone notice that the side assist lights come on for a brief second along with the light that warns you when you open your car door?

Yes - but the light that warns you when you open your door also warns you of an approaching vehicle or cyclist. See the exit assist section
