Just got my best MPG ever
Went from Costco in Huntsville on Wednesday 11/22 to Kennesaw, Georgia and back to Costco today. The trip was all highway (through some mountainous terrain [for Alabama] with about 20 miles of city driving when we got there. Went US 72 to Scottsboro, AL on 4-lane divided, then two lane hills to Adairsville, GA, then I-75 and US 41 to Kennesaw. Pretty much drove the speed limit the entire way, and used cruise control except on the 2-lane portion of the trip.
30.9 calculated MPG, and the computer displayed mileage was dead nuts on. Not bad for an SQ-5, one passenger and loaded with luggage.

Just had a trip from Austria to Lithuania with my 45 TFSI.
4 people, full trunk of luggage, roof box, winter tires. Stats in the picture:

14h 40min of driving. I'd estimate that 80% 1466km were mostly highways (110 or 130km/h). But it averaged to 100km/h.
8.8l/100km translates to 26.7mpg.
It's not 28 as you're getting. But I guess it's achievable without cargo and roofbox.

40 TDI Sunshine Coast to Sydney, Eastern Australia - 1060km. Highway (100 to 110km/h). Temperature mid 30's degrees celsius.
Two adults with luggage, nothing on roof. Cruise control (ACC) on most of the time.
Trip computer reporting 5.7l/100km. Reached destination with 170km range remaining on a 70 litre tank.
No idea what miles or gallons are, but google can translate.
Edit: Google tells me it is 41.2657 mile per US gallon

Our '18 Q5 routinely gets 32 MPG at 80 MPH on our 4,000 - 6,000 foot western elevations.
What is really amazing is our Saab 9-4X (same as a Cadillac SRX) 3.0 NA V6, same weight and frontal area as the Q5, struggled to get 20 MPG on the same road/speed/drivers.
