Mine happened "over the air". I still am in my 6 month free trial of audi connect/wifi. A couple days ago I got a pop-up in the mmi that asked if I wanted to update. About a day later I got another pop-up saying it had been downloaded and installed successfully.

^ Yes, I'm in Canada and about 3 months ago I downloaded and installed the previous '2017-2018' version map database update into my '18 Q5. I just checked today and saw that I can now download the '2018' version of the map database. In order to download a map update in Canada from myAudi (Canada) you need to have access (a subscription) to Audi Connect Services by way of the Audi Connect 'Assistance & Security' package, which is an included extra that comes with the Technik trim package on the '18 Q5.
If you have an '18 Q5 and don't have access to Audi's online map update, send me a PM and we can perhaps organize something or other to get the 2018 version map files to you.

With the help of rbreeze, I can able to find and download the 2018 map from Audiconnect.

I am from Canada too, no problem with the upgrade. The instructions were fine !

I don’t remember the exact sequence or location but I believe you go to navigation then click either the right or left control button. In the menu that appears, you’ll see an option to update the map data. When choosing that, you’ll have the ability to choose specific regions to download. Then, you can initiate the download.

This is only for 2018 versions.... not previous gen by chance?
I just took delivery of my 2015 last week and the dealer confirmed they did NOT update my maps.

...sigh
