Air filter longevity

Air filter longevity
Bought a used '14 S-Line Prestige from an Audi dealership in Texas a couple weeks ago. The service records indicated it was last serviced at 55,000 miles (major service milestone). I got curious when I got the car home and checked the air filter to see how dirty it was. It was the type with the foam on the intake side. That foam was disintegrated into small pieces and powder on the intake side of the air box. I cleaned it out with a brush and replaced it with a Mann-Hummel filter without the foam. Anybody know how long that filter would have to sit in there before the foam started breaking down? My guess is more than 10000 miles since it has 65k on it now.
On a side note (probably related), a few days later the CEL came on with a p0492 code.

Already have the maintenance schedule. It says first change at 55k and 60k after that. Seems kind of a long time for an air filter to be sitting in there.
The question was more to see if others have noticed the air filter foam breaking down. If so, how long was the filter in there?
