Default Transmission Issues - Help! :(

Hey everyone,

I have a 2007 Audi Q7 4.2 S-Line... Just bought it with engine light on, and worked that out with (2) MAF replacements. Engine appears to be perfect again. I am however, running into issues, directly after replacement of the MAFs, with shifting problems. Is this just strange coincidence? Or can that be linked?

After MAF R&R and clearing codes, I drove it about 6 miles to run 3 errands- shut it off 3 different times. Each time I drove it, the issue got worse and worse to the point of not being sure if it was going to go into gear when 3 point turning it back into my garage.

The problem: It was downshifting into 1st & 2nd VERY abruptly, to the point of your voice jumping while talking. When it would shift into 2nd & even 3rd occasionally, it would also thump pretty hard into gear. By the time I got it home, it would delay shifting from D to R about 5 second, and drop into gear very hard... Kinda like when you park an automatic on a hill without the parking break, then try to drop it in gear. "THUMP". I haven't touched it since.

The kicker, is I just bought this car AS-IS and am screwed. It showed NO behaviors like this, until today. I just drove it home Thursday night and it sat until this morning.

Thoughts??

~George

Hey mate, have you tried giving the manual shift mode a go by pushing the stick over to s Then pushing up or down to see if it will hold the particular gear requested or by also using the paddle shifts on the steering wheels whilst in d as this will also overcome the auto shifting and manual push it up or down to the next gear.
once you give this a go it will decide the next path of troubleshooting to follow.
cheers

Thanks for your reply! I just drove it again after letting it cool all the way down. It acted exactly how it was supposed to after starting it and driving for 4-5 miles. All seemed fine until I got home and let it sit idling outside while waiting for my wife to come out. I thought I’d fixed it after replacing the 2nd MAF (didn’t realize it had two.. DUH). Once she got in, and we drove away to run errands, it started doing all that stuff below again. As you requested, I tried manually shifting it and it did ‘hold each gear’ and upshift and downshift as expected... just very clunky and it seems like it’s very bad for the transmission.

I am inclined to think it is NOT the internals as it’s works beautifully until it gets hot or has been run a bit. If it was bad I’d think it’s just always bad. I’m thinking it’s ancillary but I don’t know??!

-EDIT- I recall romping the throttle a few times before it started really acting up

So very confused!

George

Hey mate. Just out of chance with the air flow sensors were the place in the correct way around with the arrows both facing towards the centre of the engine and no chemical spray cleaners used on the insides of your intake tubes? This will really upset the sensors otherwise.
As for the shifting transmissions do have a common link between error and been warm. As the solenoids used for shifting heat up the magnets become weak and cause the valves to stick resulting in driving habits Like you have as you mention on when the car warms up. Also on the other flip side the oil can also contribute to this as well by when it warms up it looses It thickness and begins to aerate due to the oil been old.
audi said these trans were sealed for life with oil. I have a 09 model same as yours and recently changed all my driveline oils at 130,000klm and without a doubt
The trans responded better.
do you have a Audi software tool or only a OBDII tool to check for errors mate?

Update: Pulled fault codes with a neighbor's VagCom. I have a total disaster on my hands here. 13 different fault codes, some appear severe. It seems so bad, that it makes me wonder if it is centralized to an ECM or major electrical monitoring component. It's pretty bad!

George,
Did you clear all the codes and try scanning again?

Also, I'd recommend you perform a tranny adaption on the vehicle. BTW, I'm local to you and have some experience with the 4.2 model Audi + have a full VCDS

Darn it, no! I decided not to clear because I was afraid that a mechanic or anyone else, wouldn't then be able to diagnose. But I just realized that the data logs were saved on my laptop! Darn it, duh!

Do you really think that just clearing all those codes fixes the problem? What would I look to gain from that?

I just read some of that transmission adaptation instruction- My last question was answered when reading that (sorry about that). Looks like the codes need to be cleared to do this. This looks pretty complicated, and, I don't actually have the VDCS, I just had a town neighbor swing by and draw the codes for me then left

George,

You’re not spamming. You have an issue and the community is here to help you. Just give them a bit to settle in and I bet you can get your diagnosis straightened out.

Best of luck to you,

Grey
