3.0 TDI oil use...? 12,000 km AND Oil Level Minimum Light is on...

Was driving back form the shops today and the yellow "oil level min" light appeared. I called the Audi Techs form the car as I drove and they asked me to pop in for a "top up" which was ok as I was very close to shop at the time.

While there I asked if this was normal - a new 3.0 TDI (April 2008) with 12,300 km on it needing more oil? They told me the 3.0 TDI is configured to "use some oil"...

I was with my wife and both kids, who were being obstreperous (the kids, for a change...), so I had no time for a discussion on the subject, but I wonder if anyone can enlighten me?

The techs even game me a 1 litre oil refil can so I can "top it up myself" WHEN the light comes on again.

Is this for real...?

Hmm... found an older post from BigLadUK and he explains that the TDI engins do use some oil - moreso during "early life"" (<10,000 km)... as I am at 12,000 km this would appear to in line with expectations.

Anyone agree?

odd, I have had no oil warning yet and I am at 16,600 miles - I have a 3.0TDi. Service is due in 400 days last time I checked...about 2 weeks ago.

My 4.2 needs a quart every 5,000 mi. Audi says that's normal

I had the same thing with my 3.0TDI at approx the same kms. I just topped it up and it has not consumed any more since then (which is approx 20,000 kms).

Hmmmm.... 2 minor details here

1: you drive FSI which is not what SteelWarHorse3.0TDi asked about.

2: you previously commented that your car was "burning" oil.
So why do you now declare that on that basis it is normal for his car.
Is it even the same oil?

As it happens, that is a normal burn for This 3.0 TDI engine. Common rail high Compression EGR TDI engines do burn quite a bit and that is why the spec for the oil is so high. It is also very important to use the correct high spec oil too.
