Default Battery re-code clarification?

For my 2015 Q7 I went to the dealer and got an OEM Varta (VAO) battery (000 915 105 DL) for a simple 1:1 swap, as that’s the same battery that is being replaced.

The battery swap procedure while goofy, was nothing challenging. For the recode I used OBDEleven and went into Channel 19 Gateway adaptation 004 and changed the serial number (which had been all 0’s), to the serial number off the new battery’s BEM sticker. I left everything else the same (the “000 915 105 DL VAO”).

Is that the only change required to recode the battery?

Or do I need to go someplace else in OBDEleven to also change value/recode? It seems some older Q7 (or other model Audi’s) have a Battery Management System where they update a value there, but I don’t find this channel (61) on my 2015 Q7.

The 61 should be for older models only. The battery management tracks the statistics on the battery, such as lifetime draw, as it ages. IIRC, coding a new serial number through that gateway should reset those stats, yes. However, check the stats after you've done that to confirm that they are reset.

Don't run the new battery without that, though, because the car won't charge it properly and you'll have additional issues in the near future as a result. Or, just unplug the silly management system until you get it sorted out (though, I'll admit, that's not a popular choice around here, so I won't advocate that for anyone other than myself).

So, I replaced my battery a couple months ago. Yesterday, I try to start the key using the actual and it just clicked and then the cluster and all went blank. Attempted to jump it but couldnt get enough juice to turn over. Go to work, come home to work on it and it starts immediately. Over the weekend, I lost my keys. I have a spare fob but its beatup pretty good so I only use it for the physical key. Is it most likely a dead battery due to not having it recoded? Or could it be related to using my broken key fob... Or something else! haha

Not sure I follow completely: Were you using the spare unit while you were having these issues, or you had these issues first, then lost the key, and are still having the issues after?

If the car started fine later without any external charging, it can't be the battery. I have found, though, that these batteries can take a long time (like two hours or more) to get enough charge to crank the engine when they do get drained.

As far as draining batteries and not coding them, it seems like maybe issues 6-12 months out from when you installed it are likely related to that.

No, the issues started the when I first attempted to use the backup key. When we hooked it up, it would try to turn over a bit, then just click and the cluster would go black.

Well, if you have a charger (not jumper cables, but something like a 6A+ wall-plugged unit), put it on the car for a day and try again after.

Not sure what year your Q7 is, but you may also have parasitic drain issues from your touch-sensitive door handles. Ultimately, that was the primary issue on mine. There are some really informative threads on this site about that problem.

I ordered one of those this morning. its a 2015, I do have those. the fact it started right up after 8hrs since attempting to jump it makes me think it could be something else.

I was just about to add about the door handles draining the battery. Very easy fix...

Will the parasitic drain from the door handles happen if even if I dont lock the car? The rear and passenger were locked but when I leave in the garage, I dont hit the lock button
