Default Confusing A/C problem

We had issues with car overheating and ac not blowing cold air (just sometimes). After many faulty thermostats frkm the dealership, we finally have a functional one installed. The ac however sometimes blows hot and sometimes blows cold air. It seems like an on/off all of a sudden feature. All settings remain the same i terms of temperature etc. It sometimes fixes itself fornmsny days blowing ice air, and sometimes it suddenly returns back to warm air. Dealership recommended replacing the whole compressor and some other smaller psrts around it (2900$). I believe its an electrical problem. I have good knowledge about a lot of things in cars but not the ac systems. Wgat do u guys think is the problem? I thought about relays or sensors maybe

Could be a lot of things but one of the first things to check is the electric radiator fans. If they do not run properly the head pressure will rise excessively and the compressor will shut down.

If the fans were not running properly, wouldn't they cause engine overheating? Temperature wise, the engine is doing fine, at least after changing the thermostat. Sorry I could be wrong, but I'm not being able to relate the AC with the fans.

Refrigerant could be overcharged, this would cause it to shut down when pressure gets too high and turn back on when it cools down.. Or the pressure switch is faulty.

Was helping my dad with a vehicle that was loosing AC on hot days and long trips.. He bought a can of refrigerant and put it in and it just made it worse to the point you could hear it cycling on/off repeatedly.. Bled out some refrigerant and it started working.

That's some good news i guess. I will ask the dealership or a mechanic to completely bleed the refrigerant, and to change the pressure switch. Unless someone has another opinion on the subject?

Not necessarily unless conditions were such that the engine needed the additional airflow over the radiator to remove heat. The AC Condenser coil ( in front of the radiator) is FAR more dependent on the fans. If they don't run when the AC compressor is running, the system will not condense the compressed refrigerant an an overly high pressure condition ( on the high side prior to the expansion valve) will develop almost instantly and the pressure switch will shut down the compressor.
I'm not saying this IS your problem. Just that it warrants checking. There are LOTS of things that could be causing your intermittent lack of cooling. It likely will require use of refrigeration gauges and scanning with VAG com to figure it out. Ours had a blower motor( for the front AC and heater) fail once and it acted just like the compressor was shutting down. Even the rear air would blow hot. Everything is interrelated. You'll likely need someone well versed in automotive AC and hopefully familiar with VW Audi. Good luck!

The problem is that the dealership said it needs a new compressor, and I'm sure they used some scanners, but they also just want to rip people off in Lebanon, so it might not be that big of a problem.

Wow, this is weird... I have to definitely check these too. Shouldn't there be no air coming out of the vents if the blower motor was out?
