Default Fuel Filler Problems

I 've writen about this before and I find it incredible that more people do not complain. Aparently, in the South East there are many auto diesel fillers that use unleaded pump handles. With this filler, the protective flap in the fill pipe will not open. Typicaly, I have no problems at BP stations, allways a problem at Hess. Others I am not certain. I am interested if anyone has figured out a way to bypass the release in the fill pipe. I believe it will be easier to modify the car than fix all the petroleum stations with proper fillers.

Am I the only one with this problem? It is a real pain to stand for 5 min. and let the diesel trickel in and splatter on yourself and the car.

Otherwise my wife and I love the car (her driver) We just finished a long trip to Florida and averaged 23 MPG with 80+ on the highway and a good bit of in town over a 2 week period. Also had car loaded with golf clubs, luggage etc.

Made the same trip 2 years ago in a Mercedes G Wagon and used exactly 2x the fuel.

Anyone?

Where is the Southeast are you talking about? Curious.

I live in Greensboro NC but have had the problem in VA, SC, GA, FL. and TN.

Obviously, it is only when traveling since you quickly learn the local stations with the wrong filler.

Weird, I live in Winston-Salem and have had no issues whatsoever on any of my trips all over the state. Your mileage may vary, I guess.

Perhaps this is only on a 2009. I will check on the next service.

Next time you fill up, try Hess, they are the only ones I have found that allways have the smaller 21mm filler.

When you look at the filler it will be obvious it is smaller. The question is, will the smaller one activate your flap.

Let me know. Thanks

The BMW adapter mentioned in this thread is available from Pelican Parts for $10.70, including shipping. It even comes in a screw cap container to contain the odor.

Whether I'll need it or not, it seems like a good little piece of kit to carry in the car.

Thanks Dutch, nothing more frustrating than a winter or rain fill up that lasts 10 min.

I had to email and ask about it. They sent me the link to the page for the part. Here's the link:
