The ignition will prime the fuel pump. No VCDS needed. Do not bother trying to prefill it.
Don't take my word for it though, when you install the new one turn the ignition to run (or press start without the brake I think is how you do it on push to start). After a period of time you will hear the pump kick on, fluid flow and air being expelled if you have the hood open standing near it.
Do it a second time if you want to be sure and shouldn't hear any bubbles, at least not by the time the cycle is done. Then go ahead and start it and it will instantly fire up.
I used VCDS after I did this just to confirm the same pump was being triggered and there wasn't any other air to expel. It was fine, VCDS was not needed.
I don't think they would engineer these that if someone ran out of fuel it was self destruct on next start anyways, so I imagine priming it prior to cranking it isn't a big deal if you didn't.
