Default 2018 Alternate tire sizes..

The original tires are 285/45R20. An alternate size is 255/50R20. I have been running it for my winter tires, and may get this size when my regular tires need replacement. The price difference is a lot - about $720 a set instead of $1300.

Physical difference is just a 0.1 inch difference in diameter. Same load range. They are 1.2 inches less wide though.

Just wanted to mention it in case it helps someone or in case someone can tell me why it is a bad idea to have tires 10% more narrow.

I’m running the 255 as winters. One thing I’ve noticed is under more aggressive driving, the tires roll a bit more and grip isn’t as good. I’m sure the fact they are softer compound and a bit narrower have something to do with it.

Personally, I am not going to run 255s on my all seasons due to my driving style. I might opt for 275/45 as many others have done. I have the S-Line OEM 20’s.

275/45 are 1.3% smaller. If you drive 69,000 miles, your car will report it as 70,000 miles. It is only 0.4 inches less wide though, so maybe a good idea. The diameter difference bugs me more than the width difference I think. I am into accurate data on miles and speed.

My driving style is gentle enough with it because I mostly drive a Tesla Performance where I tend to turn faster with that.

I agree with you on the diameter. That is why I actually opted for the 255 rather than the 275 for winters...that and the fact generally narrower is better for winter.

TBH, the 255 have been ok this winter. There were a couple of times when it was dry I drove a bit more aggressively and definitely noticed the performance difference that I attributed to more than just the softer winter compound. If you can find a higher performance 255 with stiffer sidewalks but still a generally compliant ride (non-RFT) that might minimize the dip in performance going from 285/45 to 255/50. In fact - I might look into this when time to change the OEM 285's.

I'm thinking about putting on these tires.

The stock run-flat is so expensive and low mile usage.

If you want a good riding, economical, and long lasting tire I would recommend one of these. But you can call tire rack and ask for yourself...

Otherwise I would recommend a shorter treadwear tire that is great all around... I run these as my summer set in New England and many other folks run these as well. Tried and tested for sure.
