Yes, front plates are required here in CA, just many of us do not bother and take the risk . Been going plateless upfront since taking delivery little over a year ago and never an issue. Sherif station right near my house so I am around patrols all the time, none have ever said a word. I do carry my front plate in the car under cargo mat in back just in case.

I got mine from Audi South Coast in Costa Mesa, CA. When we placed the order for the car, I told the dealer to make sure the front license place bracket was not installed. They gave me the bracket and screws when I picked the car up.

Just keep the plate in the car. Tell the cop you didn't have it on because it ruins the look of the car, but then ask the cop if you can take 30 seconds to cable tie it on now. Mostly the cop wants to know that it is accounted for and not on another car.
