My Q7 stock size is 285/45/20 and I'm not having much luck with Nokian - I wanted to put WG 4s on but they don't make them yet

You need to get the alternate size. I am not near my car to tell you what that is.

275/45/20 - Running the Federal snow tires here in Wisconsin. Thing is unstoppable! Under $500 for all 4.

Don't doubt it. With a 440 HP tuned 5K lb SUV doing spirited jaunts on the highway and back roads to many mountains all over New England I would prefer something a little more premium.
Doesn't make sense for me now because I have all seasons (275/45/20) mounted on the stock wheels so I am trying to keep mount/balance costs low by having two sets of wheels and making the tires last more than one season.

You must be driving a lot in winter as your DMV-2s are half worn. I also have two sets of tires - winter set is similar to your current one. But my Blizzaks - now in their fourth winter - still have 9/32" left on them, which is quite unexpectedly good - better than my experience with the all-seasons tires on Q7. The winter set drives probably somewhere around 4K-4.5K miles per winter (November-March).
