Interesting... My start/stop definitely will NOT activate when I'm in S mode. I'm glad I can switch back and forth between D and S to essentially choose whether to let it activate or not. Also, if I'm stopped in D and with auto-stop active and engine off, I can shift into S to force it to turn back on. I'll do that a second before I need it on if I know I'll need to punch it (turning, etc.).

on my 16 A6 and 14 A8L S mode would disable it... not on my 17 Q7

In my 2019 Q7, "S" definitely didn't prevent auto stop. Thank God for Obd11, though.
Super, super annoying feature. I'd be OK with it if it didn't shut off the instant (if not before) the vehicle came to a complete stop. It makes stop signs a major annoyance as the engine dies just as come to a stop and you lift your foot to proceed through the empty intersection.

Just confirmed last night S mode using gear selector disables auto stop/start in my '17 Q7.
Cannot confirm with the dynamic mode differences though, but doesn't dynamic mode in Audi Drive Select default trans to S mode?

It could be your battery.
If your battery’s state of charge falls below 70%, auto start/stop won’t work. This is the most common reason why the system stops working.
To check your SOC, use VCDS to look at channel 19-CAN Gateway, then measure block, then enter 019. This will show your current state of charge. My car was at 50% on a cold start and usually it would take at least 30 minutes for the alternator to get it to the right level for the system to work. With a new battery, it works almost all the time.

Regarding the stop/start feature, I am curious if it is hard on the starter. i.e.; will the starter wear out sooner with this feature? Thinking of always turning it off to save starter wear. I purchased a Q7 Premium+ about a month ago.

Probably not. The system was designed to handle literally thousands of restarts. If the stater were compromised in any way the system would just disable and you’d probably see an error message showing a malfunction in the start stop system.
