I agree it really is hit or miss, but if I open it as shown in the video posted above, with a kicking motion under the bumper it opens most of the time. IME I have found that it also seems to be hit or miss on other vehicles I've tried it on.

Swinging your foot to either side of the tow hitch should do the trick. If you have the towing package, avoid the middle/center of vehicle.

Cheers.

This is exactly why. You cannot swing it every which way. There is a certain motion and, if followed, will work every time. Every manufacturer is a bit different but with the Q7 you do a slow kicking motion.

Kick in and out slowly. Forward and back. Once.

No sideways motion, etc. It will work every time. And like someone said, if you have the tow pack, just do it slightly right of center

Or left of center. I almost never have a problem with the kick method anymore.

I almost never had any problem with this, works perfectly every time and most of the times for my 3 yr old too
Like others commented, left center is where I normally give a kick motion but don't physically hit the base, it takes probably about a second to open/close though.

I had the same issue on my S7 all the time but I realized that , I would make a motion and nothing would happen right away so then I would keep making a motion and it wouldn't open. Now I go to the left side of the rear bumper swipe my foot left then right and then back up and it opens every time. I think the sensor on my hatch was blocking it from opening it if I was too close to the hatch.

If you car has tow hitch, you cannot kick in the center. I notice my car only work, I mean work every time when I kick on the right side of the tow hitch.
