Update: Holding the console button not only drops the GPS screen but it stay down even when the vehicle is restarted the next day.

What kind of stations do you guys listen to that you constantly don't want music to be on when you start the car? Or is it because you blast the music on the way home, and you forget to lower the volume, so it's too loud when you get in next morning?
Muting may not work but lowering the volume or changing inputs to "turn off the radio" does.

I had the same experience with my 2014 A6. The media/radio volume came back on after every restart of the ignition, even when media/radio was turned off and not in use when "OFF" button was pushed. Very annoying. My 2018 Q7 does not have this problem. If I turn off the media/radio, it stays off (or at least muted) until I select media/radio again. So sometime between 2014 and 2018 Audi has fixed this problem at least on some models.

There is no "fix". It is designed this way. This is not an Audi thing....most new cars with complex entertainment systems works this way. There is no separate "radio"...it's all software interfaced with a major controller. The controller turns on upon start up, and the radio is on as well. The answer is to simply turn down the volume or mute the sounds. The radio is never "off"...the controller is always on, along with the radio. You simply control the volume at all times. It makes sense and is very simple to turn the volume down. It's basically and industry design principle at this point, so don't expect it to change going forward, expect it to be commonplace in every car you drive.

Took me five years ....
...to find the solution to this problem. Always bothered me that when I drove my wife's 2014 A4, the radio came on, even when it was off when I last drove it. But I think I maybe found a fix, ironically by reading complaints about my 2020 BMW 330. A poster didn't like the fact that the car's electronics stayed on for a while after shutdown in his garage when the key was nearby. Learned that holding the radio on/off button for about 3 seconds shuts everything down. Tried this in the Audi and was delighted to find that the radio was off when I restarted. Yes, (as someone posted), the MMI goes to sleep, but I just push "menu" and it wakes up. I know ... what's the difference between pushing the Menu button and the radio on/off button (to silence the radio)? The difference is that I am telling the car what I want, rather than vice versa. Sorry if everybody already knows this – just thought I would comment since I just discovered this miracle cure.

I have not encountered this problem in my Q7, I always bring the volume down to zero before shutting off and when I turn it on the next day it's still at zero.

My '19 Q7's radio sometimes comes on randomly all by itself. It only happens from time to time. My A7's radio used to come on by itself all the time. I'd be cruising down the road in peaceful silence, then boom all of a sudden the radio just comes on. I gave up trying to get the dealer to fix it. It doesn't happen nearly as often on my Q7 so now its no big deal.
