'99 A4 1.8tqsm APR Stage 3 or '92 S4 20v turbo MTM+1?
The S4 is a bit less expensive and has more than twice the miles, but is local and a full service record car. Is the proper size for what I need, if not a bit too large.
The A4 has the big stuff (Stage 3 and exhaust) but is missing all ancillary's like suspension, brakes, FMIC. Back seat a bit smaller than I'd like. Low mileage, sports seats, one owner, all records, but I gotta go get it from the East Coast...
Car will be used as a daily driver and winter ski machine. Both are sedans, I'd prefer avants...

Doc, you seem to go through a lot of cars...
Trying to find the elusive all-in-one car. Between these 2 there is no comparison. The A4 is smaller and lighter which makes it more tossable, assuming you do the suspension. Does the S4 have any other mods? This is a bigger and heavier car that is a more refined highway cruiser that begs to be modified with engine, suspension and brakes. Given those last 2, add the HRSB and you've got a cruiser that can be tossed around. I would be glad to give you a demo some day. Either way, I wouldn't be afraid to buy a car with any mileage if it had been properly maintained.

It is a 99 and not 99.5...
That's not an issue with me, Audi did mostly cosmetic interior upgrades for the '99.5.
I won't be using the car on the track, as I'll be keeping and using my Porsche 944 turbo for that. It'll be a pure daily driver, street driven, winter mtn car.
The S4 has bilsteins with H&R's as well as a set of big reds for brakes and samco hoses. It has 164k miles, is a two owner pretty much all record car.
The A4 is a one owner, all records, 73k mile car. Full sport package including seats, only mods on the car are the APR exhaust and APR Stage 3 kit, it'll come with stock 16" sport wheels and a set of B5 S4 Avus wheels with snows.
The A4 is $3000 more than the S4, plus shipping costs.
I've only driven one 20v car in the past, a '95 S6 Avant, which needed some work. I geuss I need to drive the S4 and see what it's like. What are the main differences between a '92 and the later '95 S6 cars? I know the drivetrains last a long time, but I am a bit concerned about picking up a car with 164k miles on it and having to deal with maintenance and resale concerns once I push the mileage up close to 200k...

Here you go...
The 92 came with the lowest springs and stiffest suspension but this car has gone beyond that in mods, very good thing. It also came with a 17mm rear sway bar that was eliminated in the following years except for the Avants, you don't need a braket kit when ordering the 26mm HRSB ;-), very good thing. It doesn't come with the front upper strut bar unless it was a late model 92. Unless it was modded it has the older R12 refrigerant. Lastly the 92 only has a driver's side airbag.

Just reliability issues on the 99 and older a4's. Just some personal experiences with both and from that I think that the 99.5 on up are more reliable.
