Worth it to go out for that? or will it all be rocks and trees?

Default Totally depends on the year. Frequently it sucks, but it can also be damn good.

How's that for an answer?
But seriously, it's the truth. You just never know.

Default I love Crested Butte. But, be warned, it is a steep mountain...

Blue runs at CB are double blacks at most mountains. You can imagine what the steep stuff is like. I hear there is so much snow this year the town is running out of places to put it.
I know nothing about free skiing, though.

Default I don't know how Taos is this year. :( I hear they had snow...

Crested Butte is very much like Taos. Except Taos is CB 40 years ago... IMO, on powder days, Taos and CB are both far and away better than almost anything in north america. CB has better lifts and access, but that just means more people ski it up. If you hike in Taos you can avoid crossing another track all day long. I also hear they are getting ready to open up to them snowboarders. Maybe you should go before they make they mountain un-pure. :P

Default Taos opening up to snowboarders? no effin way

Judging from the "poachers" video Burton put out, and the snowboarders that poached Taos getting tackled by ski patrol (only resort of 4 that actually tackled them) and threatened to call the cops on them and get them arrested.

I'd think Deer Valley would open up first of the 4 (others are Taos, Alta and Mad River Glen) just due to money. The others have this image or pureness or whatever that keeps them from admitting snowboarding.

Default I bet you Deer Valley holds out...

That is why I will go there again next year..just for that reason. I am an alpine guy...I use to teach at Vail...I will never be a snowboarder..and I think snowboarders ruin the snow for alpine skiiers. End of story.

Default and I think skiers ruin the snow for snowboarders. end of story.

moguls are not fun and skiers create moguls.

But you know what? I deal with them, and honestly don't really care. So long as people are outdoors, having fun in the winter, and don't be dicks to each other.

And to paraphrase an editor from "Skiing" magazine "snowboarding saved skiing". Reason for that statement was:
A. Putting sidecuts on skis was taken from snowboarding who had sidecuts long before.
B. Snowboarding brought in the young crowd, prior to that it was all older folk.

I tried skiing, back in the straight ski days. Hated it. Tried snowboarding, loved it from day one. I've thought about trying skiing again, but haven't gotten around to it.

Default only the front groomers are open before 12/15. They don't open the fun stuff until after

It's plenty fun though. Teo Bowl is nice. Banana Funnel is really fun if you can get first tracks in it after a good dumping. Warren Miller was up there filming in Bowl 3. You can get 2-4-1 lift ticket vouchers at Philips66 with 10gallons of gas.
