Default I think it's a lifetime of the car sort of thing, similar to the cam timing chains

I got that impression by the fact that it was located at the back of the engine on the 4.2L, and changing it requires pulling the engine.

Ask QFrog on the B5 A4 forum, he works at a dealership as a parts/service guy and would be able to help you out.

Default I wouldn't say lifetime....

Belts fail if not maintained, chains fail because chains fail.

This was debated on the B6 S4 forum a little while ago...

Default It's a chain - it's located in the rear for the S4 application - and the tensioner is suppose to be

replaced at 90K miles - to do so one has to remove the engine
