Stupid cooling fan - again.
so 3 years ago, my car's fan destroyed itself taking out a bunch of wires in the process. that time, the dealer fixed it no problem.
now I am out of warranty. I was headed up to the mountains yesterday when I hear a clicking sound that lasts for about 5 seconds. then goes quiet and everything looks/sounds fine. a few more seconds brings a glimse of white smoke coming out the rear of the car.
I exit immediately (lucky we were at an exit.) and we quickly pull the kids out of their seats in case it really is a fire. once everyone is away safely, I get the chance for a better evaluation. looks to me more like steam than smoke.
popping the hood, it looks like this time I lost several fan blades, wrapped a whole slew of wires around the fan, and managed to lose all my coolant. I cant see any spot where the radiator is damaged, so I am hoping a coolant hose was cut rather than the radiator having a hole in it.
Anyway, AAA towed me back to denver to Autobahn. luckily Randy was working on Saturday and were able to look things over. Unluckily, they are fully booked and won't be able to get to the car for a couple of days.
Coolant was spayed everywhere under the hood. As we all know, coolant is bad for timing belts, so I think that while the front end of the car is off for this repair, I will have the timing belt done too, just in case it was hit by coolant (it is almost time to be done anyway). I will also have the shop take care of a leaky passenger side valve cover gasket too.
this is going to be an expensive week. :-(
So I am allroadless at least until thursday. Hope the weather says nice while I commute on the motorcycle all week.
