93 octane really necessary?
Ok so I was having a discussion with a friend...and he said he would run 87 octane all the time in his S4. Especially once he had a tune. He said the tune would automatically adjust to the lower octane fuel. Is this true? Also, he said he didn't notice any difference in performance under the 87 octane even on stock ECU.
Advice thanks!

With a stock program, the engine manufacturer suggests 91 octane for the USA.
Yes, the ECU can retard the timing and reduce power and reduce efficiency.

The owner of an RS4 I considered buying used a low quality 91 ONCE and he ended up having to spend over $1k to fix the problems it caused. But hey, I guess you can try it out and report back to us?!

91 octane is fine. Wouldn't use 87.
There is no 93 in most parts of Canada so the requirement of 93 is irrelevent. The only places that sell higher than 91 that I know of is Chevron and Husky. Not sure about the Chevron, but the Husky has a lot of ethanol in it, so it doesn't matter that it is 94 octane. I use Shell 91, and there is no ethanol in it.
Also, the higher octane gases are supposed to have better detergents... in the mix.

The Shells/Sunoco's etc. only carry the 93 in most of DC/MD/VA. It's usually the non branded gas stations that have the 91, so it'd probably be a lower quality than the Shell 91 you get out West.

If one can not afford to maintain the car properly per the manufacturer requirements - one bought the wrong car. Get a Honda or Toyota. It is that simple.

New posts show up on top on my computer???? So I guess I'm the only one that's right...until someone else posts.
Do they make 93 octane with no ethanol in DC/MD? I'm going to have to google this one, I've never heard of it or seen it at any gas stations.

Ethanol avoidance, ramifications.
Ok, so as a new RS 4 owner, I certainly will be using Shell or Chevron. Since I live in New England, where Ethanol free fuel is virtually non-existant, what do folks add to their fuel systems and how often. Sorry to hijack the thread into an ethanol question, but any recs would be great. Otherwise, back to the regularly scheduled discussion.
