His dad took him to the school because he had bought him the RS4. Pretty sad, seemed like a ok kid.

Very sad. And I have a question..
If you are involved in a fatal accident, and it is your fault, do you automatically get charged with felony vehicular manslaughter in CA?
Seems kind of harsh, assuming it was in fact an accident. The details provided don't necessarily convince me that there was some sort of recklessness involved (racing, drinking, etc). But of course the police probably have more facts than what was written in the two newspaper stories.

you get investigated for it.....
The crash was the result of an illegal move in that he came over a double yellow line. Whether or not the circumstances involved suggest this could not be avoided are all part of the investigation.
What we do know is that someone purchased a 17 year old boy an RS4 (he is now 18). Perhaps this happens all the time, but it feels like a recipe for disaster to me. I remember the trouble I caused in a 4 cylinder CRX and can only think of what I would have done with this type of power. Others may disagree, and the car may have had nothing to do with the accident, but you certainly wonder....

Total agreement with the 2nd paragraph...
I can think of no circumstance in which that would be a reasonable decision?
I recall my business partners son [who was ~16 at the time] telling me about a classmate of his who just received her first car...a brand new B6 S4.
In both cases I think the parents displayed a comprehensive lack of good judgment.
