I always thought the deposits were never more than $500. Is it normal for this car? Did those of you who ordered have to give up $1K on credit card to secure the order?
At least he says its refundable, but the deposit does gaurantee you the car on arrival right?
Also, how long should I expect to wait for the car to arrive if I ordered it today?

ok good. just want to make sure no funny stuf is going on..
i still can't find one of these to test drive. my dealer says all the ones coming in are sold and he's not sure he can get permission for us to drive any of them..
i really kind of need to drive this before i can be sure its worth the difference in cost over my B7 S4...

that's reasonable...
sometimes it's just a way for dealers to weed out people who aren't too serious about a car... otherwise there'd be an uneccessarily large list of potential buyers, some of which who are on the list just for the sake of being on the list without any true intention of ever buying the car.

Do you lock in your final price at order time, or is that not until it arrives?
I usually drive off the lot, I am not used to ordering. If I put $1k down, am I locking into an agreed upon price, or is that going to change later?
I would rather lock in at a lease price that I want.

I would wait on price, if they will agree to it.
With a few exceptions, most of the RS4's are going for MSRP right now. In a couple of months, I think the prices will soften a little. Ideally, you might get them to agree to MSRP or curent market value, whichever is less.
As far as leasing goes, AFS usually only allows the dealers to lock lease prices for 30 days. Today, AFS is almost the only game in town for RS4 leases. In a couple of months, I think more favorable leases will be available. Look down a few posts for my thoughts on AFS leasing.
As an aside, why wait? Post what you are looking for, somebody can probably point you to the car you want. You can have it transported to you in less than a week.
