Does a car get a VIN number before/during/after the car has entered the "production" process?

NQR Pete. The VIN is assigned once the car is...
... preferenced for production. From that point on the VIN is set. As the car's trolley, skate or skillet (same thing -- it's what the body sits on as assembly takes place) moves through the plant, it carries a sheet with the VIN. Without the VIN this early, it'd be all but impossible to determine if an order was correct or not. Also, VINs are known before a shell is shipped to Q-GmbH for paint or "other work."
Now as far as AoA Distribution is concerned, there is no VIN until the car is transferred to Audi Logistics for transport and shipping. Which is after the car is out of final assembly.
As for AoA tracking down a car that hasn't been handed over to Audi Logistics, there's no way for them to easily find get any information other than the assigned build week (KW in Audi AG speak). But if you know the right character(s), it can be done.

Once it is in the system as "Factory Inspected". Week 35 is Aug.28th to Sept.1st., so your Dealer
will know your vin # then, as they can look it up in the system under your commission #.
