Dude.. The Yoko advan S4 (A/S) weren't cutting it this morning
Last snow storm I didnt have too many problems.. today, I sailed right through an intersection with the ABS going off the whole way through it. Lucky no one was in front of me (and I was driving at ford-taurus-in-the-snow speeds). I tried them out 2 mins later on an empty strip of road and same thing (not as bad tho). Not sure if I hit a particularily icy patch or what, but I didnt have this problem last time.
Its a long story explaining why I have A/S instead of dedicated snow but yes there was a good reason for it Looks like I'm trashing these bad boys on the track this summer and getting dedicated season tires.

Even the Wintersport 3Ds will have trouble ....
I sometimes laugh at how people think they are invincible in their AWD Audi's. Dont get me wrong, AWD is great to get you going, but unless you are accelerating, it's all about the tires you got on. I had the BLizzak WS-50s on my B7S4, and now the wintersport 3Ds on my RS4. A huge difference. The Studless winters, a true dedicated snow tire ripped in the snow, and was very hard to deploy EPS when taking off, or ABS when stopping. It is very easy to set these both off with the wintersport 3Ds. That said, they are a good winter tire, and a great compromise, handling fairly well in the dry conditions, but still a winter performance tire...
Saw a nice A6 off the road today just off 128 in Manchester....Then two SUVs a short while later.......I am sure they were barrelling down 128 thinking their AWD would keep them on the road....

Poor situational awareness
Near-zero traction is just as bad for awd as it is for 2wd.
My Bridgestone RE-01Rs have been surprisingly good in the snow, as long as I stay aware that they are not snow tires, and drive smoothly.

The rep I was talking to at Tirerack.. They weren't terribly expensive at the time and he said they
would work out well.
Like I said, no problems with them yet in the wet or last snow storm..
But certainly had an interesting time with them today

Their dry weather ratings are pretty high on Tirerack
