Default Heading into some -25F degree weather, anything I should be weary about (RS4-wise)

Headed up North for a long weekend, but forcast isn't quite "warming". Today is -25F (not counting wind chill), though should get better, but still negative single digits. Would be a good test for the car (and it's mindless driver thinking of skiing in frigid conditions), but look forward to it in a way, hopefully some snow covered roads to test its Polaris-like claws.

What's the temp rating on our antifreeze? Any other items I should be mindful of, don't think the hotel has underground parking (darn it)...

The good part about all that is my current DRC leak will likely be temporarily 'frozen' LOL I await to hear from Audi corporate that hopefully they will replace both fronts (with the new part number).

Default G012 coolant is good for -35F at the minimum recommended dilution (50:50).

just read it on the back of my bottle.

i'm no cold weather expert, but you might want to check the washer fluid. if it was filled with the cheap blue stuff, that will probably freeze solid if parked outside at night.

A cold soaked start at minus 25 is one of the worst things you will ever do to your RS4. We live "up north" and the low tonight will be close to minus 40. Our Audis are nestled within a marginally heated garage. While your car will start, that first 60-90 seconds of operation can do lasting damage to the internals. As a point of refernce, we always pre-heat aircraft engines anytime the ambient temperature is below 20 degrees F, and even then that is too cold to fully prevent the risk of cylinder damage whilst waiting for oil pressure to build. Granted piston aircraft engines are vastly different and carry heavier oil, but you get the point. If you have a way to prevent your RS4 from getting cold soaked to minus 25, then you should have no problem. I've run both the RS4 and a 4.2 Q7 at minus 30 F, but I've started out from a heated garage where the car and crankcase are above freezing. We prefer to keep the Audis garaged until the ambient temp flirts with zero.

Default replace your windshield washer fluid with stuff that will go that low or it will crack

the reservoir or destroy the pumps

Default Watch out for black ice

When it is that cold the exhaust fumes will freeze directly to the pavement creating an invisible layer of ice. It looks like dry clean pavement but is actually like driving on a hockey rink. It typically only happens in the city and only where traffic is stop/go during rush hour but leave yourself lots of room from the people in front of you. Suprised me several times this morning on the way into work.

Default Thx Guys! Maybe I should bring in the RS4 for the DRC repair and use a loaner!

Trouble is, I wanted to get to try her on the mountains. Plus a loaner will be a lowly A4 with all-season tires and dunno if it is worth the risk. Still waiting to hear from Audi if they will replace both front shocks with the new part number (only 1 is leaking but only after 200 miles since both were replaced, so the other is a matter of time; hell, maybe it will leak on the way back ;-o).

It looks ike the forcast is calling for some "warming", so looking at lows of 0 to -6F.

PGM, at this temp does all you said still hold true? Another alternative is to look for underground parking, but may be tough to find on the mountain...

Default -25? Man that sucks!

I am at LAX right now, getting ready to connect to my flight to Bangkok Thailand for 1 week of vacation, followed by 2 weeks of vacation in Philippines. Will be doing a ton of scuba diving and drinking ridiculously cheap beers. Wife and I will be nice and tan, probably won't see any temps less than 70F. Duuuude, -25, bummer. Thats why we leave this time of year every year for a few weeks. I hate peeing popsicles.

Back in a few, have fun modding your RS4's!

Why leave Los Angeles? It's another perfect 77-degree day here!
