I posted a while ago about this trend. I think VW is hurting the resale and premiere value of the
Audi brand.
This is really going overboard.
When everyone says, how's that $80k VW, they are starting to have a point.

True, but the last Passat to share platforms was back in the B5 days
and now that they are built on the Golf platform there is hardly anything remaining that makes it similar to a current Audi, specifically the B6/B7s. Plus VW will never have the Prestige of Audi even if it does own them. The Phaeton bombed and one can pick up a two-year old W12 for an incredible bargain because of its horrible resale. Still a great car with 450bhp, but in the end; the majority of people just don't see the point of a VW luxury car.
IMO, VW really needs something exciting in their line because the only 'performing car' that they have is the R32. They need to 'spice' up their line to compete against the Japanese competitors out there and to hopefully become more 'desirable' because right now, they have a boring line-up. They should have brought back the 'Corrado' with the same 3.6L engine.

I think VW should dump hundreds of millions of dollars into a luxury large sedan to
compete with the A8, BMW and Merc.... I think that will be a hit.
You know... the sad thing is that I belive these cars will sell and steal sales of the A4 and S4.... Audi better do something to anwser this.... maybe turbos will come back the the S cars, who knows?

If there's a blurring of the lines, then it forces Audi further upscale...
which I don't like only because they get ridiculously pricey as a result. $45k Passats doesn't leave much room for future affordable Audi sedans.

There will always be a demand for both VW and Audi cars...nothing new.
That said, I think no matter how nice VW cars get, there will still be the stigma that it's a VW. Plenty will still opt for the 4 rings.
