New S4 Avant vs used RS4
I just test drove an S4 Avant tip/Nav/parktronic and loved it but was shocked to see the sticker of 58,000. Correct me if I'm wrong but couldn't I buy a used RS4 for mid 50's? I haven't driven an Rs4 yet because frankly I'm afraid that I would buy one on the spot.. Did any of you cross shop S4 vs RS4 before buying your RS4??

Well, I traded in my '07 RS4 on an '08 S4 Avant tip.
I've had lots of past Audis, including an '04 and an '05 S4 Avant. I traded in the latter car on the RS4. However, I really missed the practicality of the Avant. I ended up getting an '08 911 Carrera and at that point the RS4 seemed redundant. So I went back to the S4.
Mind you, if I hadn't bought the 911 I would still have the RS4! The S4 can't hold a candle to that car, which is a fantastic performer for a 4 door sedan.
If I was limited to a single car, I'd still have the RS4. But the S4 Avant/911 combination is terrific.

I went to pick one up when a shiny RS4 caught my eye. Glad I did
I drove both. I decided to get the S4 for my 98 year old grandma. She says its "okay" a little sluggish gettin' on the freeways

If I only had one vehicle to choose from...
It would still be the RS4. The BEST all-round vehicle known to man IMO.
Two vehicles, one for hauling stuff, one for pure driving pleasure...i'd be getting an RS4 Avant and a TT-RS, when available

As a former RS4 owner, I'm considering picking up a leftover B7 S4 avant.... always loved avants...
and now that I hear the next generation B8 S4 will not have an avant version because of America's general dislike of wagons with preference towards suvs, an A4-sized avant with a V8 is soon going to be a somewhat rare commodity to have. Even if the B8 S4 gets an avant treatment for north america, it seems that a supercharged V6 will supplant the V8.
Then again, pretty soon, the RS4 will also be a rare commodity since it is out of production and a successor won't be out for a while.
My vote goes for a used RS4, but mind the mileage and research the previous owner and how they used it. Example: I wouldn't buy one from someone like myself who has flogged it at the track many times.
