Default Office debate... opinions needed. Which would be a more capable snow vehicle:

My RS4 with stock 19" wheels and Wintersport 3Ds

or

Porsche Cayenne GTS with 21" stock wheels and Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow tires (295 35 21)

Thoughts? (I know neither is really ideal)

That's easy, the Cayenne of course. Better tires(for snow/ice) and more ground clearance.

Default But the GTS ground clearance really isn't that much more and both are on winter tires.

I think it may be close.

I'm not talking about climbing snow banks, etc..

Default I have far narrower 18" Pirelli M&S on my wifes Cayenne S

and the car goes just fine in snow, braking is less than ideal in ice and hard packed snow. I'd imagine 295 rubber is just asking for trouble. Ill tell you how it compares tonight after I put my RS4 on snow for the first time.

The Porsche/Pirelli OE M&S are probably more mud than snow tires to be honest, far fewer small sipes in the tread blocks then you would expect.

which car is heavier?
has narrower tires?
e.g., more contact pressure
awd?
better ground clearance?

295's would be nasty in snow...especially on a light car

Faster in 3-6 Inches: RS4, deeper snow, obviously GTS, ground clearance my friend

The vehicle with the skinnier tires would win. Period.

That's pretty much my feeling...as long as ground clearance isn't an issue.

Default I've never driven the Cayenne so can't comment on snow handling abilities, but the RS4 with snow

tires is a blast to drive in the snow. I live in Wisconsin and woke up this morning to 14" of new snow in my driveway and my street hadn't been plowed yet. I simply jumped in the RS4 and drove to work, no drama at all. On the way I saw many vehicles in the ditch, several of them SUV's. I've had no problems driving the RS4 even in deep snow. I use wintersport M3's 225/45/18.
