Default Oil maintenance in rs4

Sorry for a newbie questions and I am sure this is already answered.

I was told that I should carry a QT of oil in the car in case I need to add some more. Is that true? How often should I check the oil? What is the best oil to use in the car? When should I do my first oil change?

Thanks

Default answers...

1. yes, I think that's true in any car...if you're going to check the oil, then you should be prepared to add oil when necessary.
2. you should check the oil every time you fill up with gas...again, that's true in any car (except BMW, who evidently think owners of their vehicles are too stupid to do it themselves)
3.any oil that is VW 502.00 approved...readily available brands in the US include Mobil 1 0W-40 and Castrol Syntec 5W-40.
4.your first oil change is included in the price of the car, and is recommended at 5000 miles.

Default oil change

on advice from this board, i went ahead and changed my oil at 2k miles to get the break-in oil out... i tried to get the dealership to use Lubro Moly, but they refused...would only put in Castrol oil, which from my perspective is ok too...

Default Yes. Keep a qt in the trunk.

I needed a qt in BFEgypt and no one had synthetic. Very frustrating.

I check my oil every 2 weeks or so when I wash the ride and this time around when the oil light came one I was very embarrassed that I didn't "check it" before my trip.

Default Why did the dealership refuse to use Lubro Moly ?

assuming you supplied it ? I first used Motul XCESS 5W- 40 and have switched to Lubro Moly - both are VW 502 approved.

Default you know dealers - told me that it would void the warranty

having researched on this site, i assumed that the service manager was incorrect. however, wasnt interested in a long debate with him. i was told that Castrol was the approved oil for the RS4, and that they would use Lubro Moly if i supplied it, but at my own risk should something ever go wrong, Audi might not backup/warranty the Lubro Moly

i know that the Castrol is been found to not hold up as well over time, but perhaps i will just do more frequent changes

Default RI_RS4 developed an oil specificly for his car & FSI w/RLI & Terry Dyson. Dealer has new oil

<a href="http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a364/AudiJunkie/?action=view&current=SLXpro.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a364/AudiJunkie/SLXpro.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Castrol SLX Pro 5w-30 is now at the dealer as of 12/07 VW 504/507. I'll follow up later about this dealer oil when I have time.

Few here will take their oil system as seriously as RI_RS4 did, but his extensive work w/Dyson Analysis and Renewable Lubes could benefit everyone, since VW 502 oils are bunk.

VW 502 sequence was fun on an old Jetta 2.Slow in 1998 and based on the simple Euro ACEA A3 spec that $2 blends and 15w-40 HDEOs meet. VW 504/507 is the current spec, Castrol SLX Pro meets it (aka Castrol Edge 5w-30, more reading at Castrol.co.uk) Edge is similar to German Syntec 0w-30 a 12cSt 30 weight that meets HT/HS&gt;3.5cP, likely an exotic methylcrylate co-olgimer PAO base.

RLI Double-Super-Secret RS4 Racing Oil is a vegtable base oil with a ton of high tech behind it. I posted some stuff in the B7 Forum in regards to the FSI stuff. I'll post more links if there is interest.

Two over the counter oils that are better than VW 502 are at WalMart, Shell Rotella T Synth 5w-40 and Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel 5w-40. I'd top off with 15w-40 if synth is unavailable or it's near the end of an oil change interval.

Bobistheoilguy.com Forums is the place to get good studied info on oil.

RS4 info in under "Used Oil Analysis"<ul><li><a href="http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php">http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php</a</li></ul>

Default Lubro Moly shouldn't have been a problem with your dealership....

I dumped mine at 700 miles through the dealership. Of course, I then switched to Lubro Moly which is VW APPROVED. They should have no problem with ANY approved oil. I even had them mention it on the service receipt. Of course, I brought my own. I'm at 1400 miles now, and plan my next for 1500 miles (again with Lubro Moly). Then I'll let it go to 5000K.

Default Re: Yes. Keep a qt in the trunk.

yes this is the norm for me. the owners manuel tells you to keep extra qt on hand so i do. plus i learned that most high reving motors will go thru oil a bit. my porsche was the same way.
