How does "stable" translate to "critical"?

Default I don't think so...

"Critical" implies there's a serious risk of death within 24 hours, where "stable" means that no vital signs are changing. Obviously if one is alive without changing vital signs, one should stay that way.

At least that's my understanding. Perhaps there's a doctor in the house who can shed some more light on the matter.

Default You are right, seroiusly injured patients who are not deteriorating are described that way.

All I saw was stable at first a second report does say critical. Hope he gets well even if he likes M3's. Massive decelaration injuries have a bad habit of injuring the aorta, which shows up later.
He is listed as critical in the link below<ul><li><a href="http://jalopnik.com/cars/news/breaking-top-gear-presenter-richard-hammond-in-car-crash-202035.php">http://jalopnik.com/cars/news/breaking-top-gear-presenter-richard-hammond-in-car-crash-202035.php</a</li></ul>

Default FWIW I am an anesthesiologist at a level 1 trauma center...

We unfortunately see this type of stuff all the time. However that type of speed, like a head-on of two cars at 130+ mph usually is fatal or causes permanent damage. He could use all of our prayers.

Default Making karma comments about what car the guy likes is in poor taste. I would agree that......

prayers are more in order for anyone in that situation.
