potential 2007 rs4 purchase---Ohio
Hello.
I'm new to the forum, and relatively new to Audi---have a '13 Q7 S line.
Recently, a 07 RS4 with 84k miles has surfaced for sale at a large Audi dealership in Ohio. Asking price is 32K.
I did a drive by the dealership this weekend and it looks pretty clean from the outside. i did notice an aftermarket exhaust but couldn't tell brand---heavy snow, dark, etc.
Carfax history shows 2 owners and major servicing completed, however, it also showed a changed clutch and transmission pull at 35k miles.
What should i be concerned about, is this price competitive, and is the mileage an issue.
Im thinking i should spend maybe 10k more for a lower mileage car and avoid potential hefty repair bills.
Thank you and I'm looking forward to the forums!
John

Carbon Clean will probably be needed. The tranny and clutch being replaced means the car was driven hard.
I would see if you can get a test drive - if nothing else it will get you use to what drives like.
You should have the car inspected by some other shop unless the car comes with a warranty.
Agree that in you can get a car with less than 50k miles for 10K would be worth while

I wouldn't worry too much about mileage and the price seems reasonable. Things to check:
Upper control arms: There's 4. They cost around $250 each + ~$500 installation. They last around 25,000-50,000 miles.
Brake rotors: A set for the front will run close to a $1000. You can visually check these for a ridge.
DRC: Check the shocks for oil leaks, and test drive the car for clunking suspension. This is very expensive ($2-4 thousand, depending on factory or aftermarket).
Test drive for correct transmission gear synchro operation.
Tires: A good set will run you over of $300 each.
Battery: If it hasn't been replaced already. It's HUGE and is of the AGM variety so expensive. Expect to spend $375 or so.
If it hasn't been done recently, it will need a manual carbon clean. These run $750-$1300 and IMO should be done every 25,000 miles or less.
They're pretty dependable cars and they're a lot of fun too. And of course very exclusive.
Good luck, let us know how it turns out.

Thanks guys. I'm a little nervous about the transmission and clutch, and the aftermarket parts (correct install, poor diy??) Leads me to believe the poor girl has had a tough 84k miles.
I think why i was quick to jump on this one was that it is local and is cheap (relatively speaking for an rs4).
Ive had my eye on another car---this one about 300 miles away in IL.
Its an 08 with the titanium pack, 48K miles, and being offered at 45K.
Both cars are being sold by Audi dealers, so I may use the local car for a test drive, etc, and then decide.
Car hunting is both stressful and fun!

additionally, the out of state car appears to have a CPO warranty balance.

The tranny and clutch repair wouldn't bother me, so long as the test drive was good. If the tranny was warranty, they may well have replaced the entire tranny with a new one.
The aftermarket exhaust would be a "plus" in my book. Find out what it is, or take a pic and post it. We should be able to figure it out for you. Cat-back exhausts for these cars start around $800 and go up to $4000 and more. You might be lucky.

I'm going to test drive it tomorrow morning. I will try to find out the particulars of the trans service and what the exhaust is. Also appears to have BBS wheels---not sure if the originals are included too---if so, another hidden bonus.
Its Avus silver---not sure how i feel about that color.
