Question for RS4 owners regarding RPM on the highway
I was wondering what the RPM is when you are cruising at about 70 or 80mph in 6th gear. Do find that the engine seems too busy? The reason I ask is that my 2004 S4 would be turning over 3000rpm when driving about 70mph and it had a lower axle ratio (1:3.89) than the RS4 (1:4.11). The 6th gear ratio is supposedly the same on both cars (1:0.78). The RS4 must therefore be turning a higher RPM to match the speed of the S4. I was worried that the engine might seem too busy for relaxed highway cruising. I know you're going to say there is nothing "relaxed" about the RS4, but I'm still curious.

here's the difference...
...the RS4 motor at 5000rpm *feels* like the S4 motor at 3000rpm. Literally. At 3000rpm, the RS4 feels like its loafing around. I routinely cruise at 80mph in 6th and it doesn't feel busy at all...really no different than my old S4 (which was tiptronic, BTW).

I find that the car wants to run at about 90 to 100 in 6th, it seems like I have to hold her back...
The power dosen't realy start untill 2+K and it seems to run all the way up to 8K.

Busy after 5

yeah, I often find myself cruising in 4th at more dense traffic speeds (60-65)....
....which keeps the engine in a perfect position to blast through any openings in traffic. the trick is to keep it around 4000-4500 (and in S mode of course) when you're ready to pounce.

You've got to figure what the cars were made for to understand the gearing
since i've moved here to Germany and drive on the autobahn, i can understand the "high" gearing. I've always thought my audi's had high gearing (my cq did 4000rpms at 80mph, the S4 does around 3500rpms at 80mph). 80mph (130kmh) is the recommended speed on the autobahn, most people do around that when in the unrestricted zones. Having the gearing is nice because it allows the car to be in the power or just on downshift away from the powerband from 80mph+ where most of the work is over here. The BMW 525i i have over here runs around 3500rpms and the motor makes most of it's power from 4300rpms+, so with a downshift to 4th or even just keeping it in 5th, the car makes steady speed from 130kph+, it ends up topping out on a flat straight away around 235kph indicated (146mph) at just shy of redline, plenty fast for the ol' beater.

Want a great deal on a 1991 535i? I'm moving back to the US early next year and need to get rid of
mine. :-)<ul><li><a href="http://www.pbase.com/nogaroblue/535">Click</a></li></ul>
